Samoa has been given an advanced warning about the continuation of bad weather for the weekend and next week.

The Samoa Meteorology Office is predicting more heavy rain and strong winds as a result of two low-pressure systems that are developing and could turn into tropical cyclones. The first should be felt in Samoa on Saturday.

“A low pressure system is expected to develop to the northwest of Samoa by Saturday morning. This low pressure will likely intensify into a Tropical Depression as it moves over Samoa by the coming Sunday,” a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said.

“Based on its predicted development, this system will likely introduce widespread rain with heavy downpours as well as strong winds to reach Tropical Cyclone Cat 1 starting Sunday into Monday morning.”

The Met office also warned about rough seas and poor visibility.

A second low pressure system is forecasted to develop over Rotuma by Monday morning and will track east southeast towards Samoa.

“Most of the global models agree to this system likely to develop into Tropical Cyclone Category 2 by Wednesday morning as it lies just less than 200 kilometres to the south of Samoa,” the Met Office said.

“This system will forecast to bring in widespread rain with heavy falls and strong winds to reach TC Cat 2 force by Wednesday evening. Very rough seas.”

The warning follows weeks of poor weather and heavy rain which led to flooding in some parts of Samoa at the beginning of the week.
