Dance group keen to give back to Samoa

A dance group of Samoan ladies, Le La o Samoa, is delighted to be part of a concert to raise funds to help Samoa respond to the measles crisis which has already claimed more than 70 lives.

The group of 14 Samoan dancers are among a host of groups showcasing their talents at the Mangere Arts Centre during the Benefit Samoa Concert.

A member of the Group, May Cordtz, expressed her deepest sympathy to the victims and families suffering as a result of the measles epidemic.

“For us being a part of the measles fundraising on Sunday it is a privilege," she said. “When we received the invitation to perform at the Benefit for Samoa concert, we were thrilled to accept it because it is our way of helping out our Samoa.

Cordtz is one of the dancers in the Le La o Samoa dance group which was formed 12 years ago.

She is also tutor for the Le La o Samoa Dance Academy.

“It’s been a year now since our academy started. We have a few young girls but they’re not only Samoan girls but also young ones from other nations who are keen to learn the Samoan traditional dance. And as a tutor at the academy I am very happy about it."

The Academy will be having their first showcase on Saturday.

And she is very proud of how far the young girls have come.

She said Le La o Samoa dance is always keen to accept invitations to perform at occasions like weddings, birthdays and so forth.
