A woman, who was behind the wheel of a blue Hyundai Tuscon, which crashed into a bus at Asaga Savai’i on Monday, is recovering.

This was confirmed by Police on the big island.

"Luckily no one was badly injured," the Police Officer, who is not authorised to talk to the media, told the Samoa Observer.

Eye-witnesses claimed that the female driver of the SUV allegedly fell asleep before the vehicle crashed into the 'Ai'aiava bus, which was parked on the side of the road. They added that her seat belt saved her.

It was not possible to get a comment from the driver.

But the Police Officer said they are investigating the cause of the crash.

He also used the opportunity to advise the public to be alert at all times when driving.

"We've had a lot of road accidents lately," he told the Samoa Observer.

"Most of these accidents have taken away our loved ones. However, these accidents are preventable.

"We can prevent these by being careful when driving. Be mindful of the other cars on the road and children on the sides of the road.

"(And) we need to keep in mind that if you drink, don't drive. Simple as that.

"If you fell asleep on the road, park your car somewhere before continuing to your destination. We have to be alert at all time when we're on the road.

"Last thing is i want to remind people is that, unless it's an emergency, don't speed."

Monday’s crash at Asaga followed another crash last week which claimed the life of a 32-year-old father from the village of Salimu in Faga Savaii.

He was laid to rest on Monday.
