The Apia Waterfront project is expected to be completed by the end of next month, to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations in June.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure, Papali’i Niko Lee Hang.

Papali’i said the plan is for the project to be completed 31 May 2019 in time for Samoa's independence celebration.

He said the works are on schedule.

Funded by the New Zealand aid programme, the project which began in August 2018 will improve pedestrian accessibility from the clock tower to the waterfront.

Already the interpretive signs along the waterfront on the seawall of Apia have been installed together with signboards which showcase some of Samoa’s stories, experience, history and culture.

The project is managed by the Ministry of Works Transport and Infrastructure and the contractor is Zheng Construction company.

Workers on site are working on planting palm trees, smaller plants and re-growing grass in front of the Government Building.

The other stages of the Apia Waterfront project include the Mulinu'u Waterfront, Apia Waterfront Harbour and the Vaiala Waterfront. All these other stages should be completed in 2026.

“The Apia Waterfront Plan is to showcase Samoa’s natural and built environment, history and heritage, sports, local  cuisine, language and arts; encouraging our locals and visitors alike to gain a greater sense of appreciation for Samoan culture,” stated the Waterfront Plan.

“The Apia Waterfront will aim to demonstrate some of the most innovative strategies for building urban resilience to climate change. These include rain gardens, buildings designed to mitigate risks from anticipated flooding, and engaging the whole community in planning efforts. Strategies will ensure that the waterfront continues to thrive whilst embracing the realities of living with a changing climate.

“Public spaces along the Apia Waterfront will host many events including cultural and music festivals, national days of celebration, pageants, siva afi competitions, tatau conventions, praise and worship conferences, game fishing tournaments, va’a and fautasi races; swimming event; triathlons and yacht  regattas.

“ Eleele Fou in particular will be the focal point for major events and festivals with food and market stalls offering income-generating opportunities for local businesses.”
