When we talk about families we talk about our everyday struggle to make end meets.

This is what Brown Valai of Lufilufi told Village Voice when he was found making his way to work.

The 28 year old father says people are more similar than you think.

“As you go round our country and ask people what matters most to them; they all say their family comes first.

“But I’m not sure everyone who says his or her family comes first really means it.

“I don’t know about your reasons but to me personally, money is the problem.

Brown is a single struggling father.

“My wife left with our child a year ago due to some family problems, so I am still with my mother and my siblings.

“I work at Grey’s Supermarket and I’m the only breadwinner of our family.

“It is obvious that the all the hardships, struggles and problems are from  not having enough money to get by each day.

“My two siblings are at school, my mother is my priority, and we have village donations and family ’ fa’alavelave most of the time.

“I know it is the duty of the parent to provide for the family but if we don’t have money we don’t know what to do next.

“There are more than six people in our family and we all depend on my minimum wage.

“That’s the way of the Samoan sand we have lived that way for a while.

But Brown is thankful every day.

“So we hardly have any money but thank God we are still alive today.

“My mother is doing fine and we make do with what we have all the time.

“Even though I miss my child most of the time but I know he is well cared for by his mother.

He went on to say after what happened to him and his wife he swore to care his family from now on.

“I am not thinking of finding another partner, I promise to care for my family and serve the Lord because I know it’s too late to have my wife back but it’s never too late to love my son.”
