The rain failed to dampen the spirits of hundreds who took part in the opening of the 27th Teuila Festival in front of the government building yesterday.

The day started with a parade on Beach Road, kicking off the first day of activities, which included traditional games, entertainment, cricket and lots of other fun activities.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi who opened the event said the Festival is an annual celebration of Samoan culture.

“The Teuila festival is the representative of the cultural and the social norms we continue to promote in sustaining our Fa’a-Samoa,” he said.

“These define who we are in the eyes of others and I thank all of you who are participating in the Teuila competitions and exhibitions.”

He also thanked the tourists for selecting Samoa as their holiday destination and several organisations for bringing their meetings to Samoa at this time of the year.

“Not only that but to those of you who are looking after our visitors, guests so that upon their return they’ll too become our beloved tusitala like the famous Robert Louis Stevenson.

“From the top of Mt. Vaea, he attracted more people to our shores.

The annual Teuila Festival showcases Samoa’s best in the arts, tourism, food, handicrafts, crafts, entertainment and traditional sports.
