The Uilaefa clans of the Matai’a title in Vaitele, Faleata bestowed 90 chiefly titles on Saturday.

One of the family’s chiefs, Galumalemana Tipi Autagavaia, said the occasion was a joyous one for their family.

“Being a Chief comes with its responsibilities and they are bestowed upon members of the families who are keen to serve their immediate and extended families,” he said.

“It’s all about service and we all know that no matter where life takes you, being a Samoan chief means you have a commitment to your family, village and church.”

“It is a milestone in my family to see numerous families who are interested in taking on the responsibility of a Chief.”

Many of new titleholders live outside of Samoa.

“It does not matter where you reside, but when you take that oath before your extended families and take on the Chiefly title, you will be grounded in Samoa no matter what,” said Galumalemana.

“What I mean is, no matter where the Chiefs go, their families will inform them of what is happening in the families, what their contributions will be and of course they will always lend a hand. It’s that Samoan side of things that makes our culture and tradition unique, the assistance we render our loved ones during their time of need.”

The chiefly titles bestowed included Galumalemana; Tupuola; Tagaloa; Lealailepule; Su’emalo; Lepou; Auali’itia; Malagamali’i; Moetoto; Vaasila and Faleafa.
