Iona says a pay rise is the answer

Meet Iona Saufo’i 22 years of age from the village of Si’usega.

Village Voice caught up with Mr. Saufo’i while he was on his way to work last week.

Mr. Saufo’i said life here in Samoa is hard due to the high cost of living.

“There are few people in my family working but I have witnessed the struggle sometimes.

“I am working and the money I make is not enough compared with things that I want to buy after handing my pay to my parents.

And Mr. Saufo’i told Village Voice that street vendors are increasing because of the high cost of living.

“I have seen so many young kids selling stuff on the road and at the market but not going to school.

“I have also seen the increasing number of young kids selling leis next to clubs almost every night of the week.

“And I think the main reason of this is because parents are sending their children to sell stuff to make money for their families.”

Mr Saufo’i also told Village Voice that the best option to cope with this situation is a pay rise to all the people.

“There needs to be an increase for people who go to work.

“To increase their pay from work will also help the people deal with the high cost of living so they can afford what they have always wanted.”
