The “Grand Old Lady” Aggie Grey’s welcomes you

She’s back. The iconic Aggie Grey’s Hotel reopened its doors yesterday as The Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel and Bungalows.

Founded in 1933 by the legendary Aggie Grey, the hotel which started as a burger joint to serve the U.S. troops has been developed to become one of the best tourism five star properties in the South Pacific.

The 200 rooms, bungalows and suites have been renovated and refurbished to contemporary standards with a distinct Samoan ‘voice’ in the design.

The reopening follows the devastation of Cyclone Evan, which crippled the property in 2012.

But a strong resolve and hard work has seen it back. From its beautiful already fully-grown gardens, to the spectacular bungalows; the new and improved jewel promises an amazing experience.

Although much has changed; the property has retained its Aggie Grey’s Colonial feel, which is desired by many.

“The hotel has gone through quite a few stages,” said General Manager, Mark Francis.

“From when it was obviously destroyed by flooding; the hotel itself has been completely stripped down; it’s retained the heritage, the look and design of the original Aggie Grey’s but it’s been completely made modern and is at a Sheraton five star standard.”

The excitement of the opening is felt from the moment you enter through Samoa’s first revolving door.

“We’ve opened up all the restaurants and facilities in the hotel; we’ve already welcomed out first guests; today we have approximately 20-24 arrivals so it’s a slow and a comfortable start," said Mr. Francis.

“We’re very excited to have it opened and we are looking forward to welcoming international guests and Samoan guests as well.”

With two Sheraton Brand accommodations now open in Samoa, the team is happy to be able to sit back and settle into the new building.

“As we open the Sheraton we now have two in Samoa; the Sheraton Resort in Mulifanua and now the Sheraton Hotel Aggie Grey’s here in Apia,” Mr. Francis said.

“Over the next six months will be settling in and instilling the Sheraton brand into this property; over time the Sheraton has quite a few plans to upgrade the brand image; we’re doing quite a few changes.

“So those all will be reflected into the Apia Hotel and the Resort as we move forward; there will be changes as we move to be part of the Marriot Group.

“So we will become part of the world largest hotel company which will give Sheraton a reach of over 80million loyalty club members worldwide.”

But what sets apart the new Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s?

“We have the heritage and tradition of Aggie Grey’s,” Mr. Francis said. “We have a beautifully designed property that has heritage back to the 60’s, in some cases back to the 30’s; we also have all the Sheraton brand standards, service and facilities available for our guests.

“With the hotel design we are trying to retain the colonial feel; this is a jewel in the South Pacific and a renowned hotel; retaining this building particularly that we’re sitting in was very important to the Grey’s and it really gives the impression and feeling for the Sheraton Aggie Grey’s.”

The message from the Sheraton to Samoa is simple. “Welcome,” Mr. Francis said. “A message for Samoa: this is a hotel by Samoa for Samoans; we welcome you to come stay with us and dine with us.”

The hotel features two Restaurants, Lobby Lounge, Pool bar, Sheraton Club Lounge, Manaia Polynesian Spa & Fitness.
