The Rotary Club’s biggest annual fundraiser brought the fun of Australia’s biggest horse race, the Melbourne Cup, to Samoa yesterday.

Locals and expats gathered for the Melbourne Cup Extravaganza at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima where they enjoyed the festivities.

The crazy unique hats, great company, overflowing drinks, food and the enjoyment of some great horse racing was the reason of the day.

According to Rotary Samoa Club member Titilia Tuileva, this has been an ongoing annual event.

“The Rotary Samoa club has been using this Australian exciting event to raise funds for all the projects that we are working on,” she said.

The youngest horse in the field, Rekindling gave 24-year-old Joseph O'Brien something his father has yet to achieve — a Melbourne Cup victory.

The British horse came in first ahead of Johannes Vermeer and Max Dynamite over 3,200 metres at Flemington.

Rekindling made a late charge down the straight, narrowly edging Johannes Vermeer in the final 200 metres.

"I can't believe it," Joseph O'Brien said. "His preparation went really good, and Corey gave him an unbelievable ride.”
