Hospital drainage problem fixed
Residents and visitors say conditions around the national hospital have significantly improved following the disappearance of a previously reported strong and unpleasant odour in the area caused by a blocked drain.
People working close to the hospital and those who frequent the facility said better maintenance plans were needed.
Feia Pili expressed relief over the change, saying the situation has made a noticeable difference for those using the facility.
She said she was relieved that the bad smell around the hospital had now disappeared.
"It used to be very disturbing for us visiting and for our families, as the strong odour made it uncomfortable to pass through the area. It is a big improvement compared to before, and it is now much easier and more pleasant for visitors going in and out of the hospital.”
Matauaina Sanele also acknowledged the improvement, noting that concerns had previously been raised by both patients and visitors.
“The situation had been worrying for both patients and visitors, but now the environment looks much better and safer. She said that many expressed appreciation that the problem has finally been addressed.”
Fiamatai Tu’uamaali’i, a taxi driver, added that public attention may have played a role in resolving the issue more quickly.
"Without the issue being highlighted publicly, including through reports such as the Samoa Observer, it may not have been fixed as quickly. However, what matters most is that the smell is gone, the water is no longer overflowing, and the hospital surroundings have improved for everyone and that people now feel comfortable walking past here, the area where the block drain is .”
