People who went to donate their blood at the hospital shared personal motivations and reflections on the importance of blood donation, emphasising the ongoing need for more donors to come forward.

Tamara Manu, 26 years old, one of the donors, said she responded after seeing an online call for blood.

“I saw the call online about the need for blood, which is the reason why I am here, and I just felt like I had to come. It doesn’t take much time, but it could mean everything to someone fighting for their life. I’ve donated a few times before. I always think what if it were my family member needing blood? That thought alone is enough to bring me here,” she said.

The Samoa Observer also sought comment from the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health, June Scanlan Lui, regarding blood donation services, but she did not respond.

Mataniu Gasolo, a first-time donor, described feeling nervous but said the process was easier than expected.

“I was feeling nervous at first but the experience was easier than expected. The staff made it simple, and knowing my blood could help save someone makes me really proud I came today.”

Sefuluai Tino also reflected on the importance of awareness around blood supply needs.

“People don’t always realise how critical the blood supply is until they need it, highlighting the ongoing need for more donors to come forward and support hospital patients in urgent care.

A recent report from Red Cross Samoa  General Secretary Namulauulu Tautala Maualaivao said the demand for blood remains constant due to medical needs.

“Blood donation is a daily task; we conduct regular donations and extra drives to meet hospital demand. Remember, many medical procedures cannot be done without blood. Sometimes the demand is low, but supply may also be low because not enough donors are available.”
