Boxers return with 19 medals from Pacific Nations Cup
Samoan boxers delivered a dominant performance at the Pacific Nations Cup in Suva, returning home with 19 medals, including 12 gold and seven silver.
The result reflects Samoa’s strength across youth and elite divisions, following last month’s success at the Youth World Cup in Thailand, where the team also won gold and silver medals.
Independent Boxing Samoa (IBS) President Tavu’i Mike Lemisio said the result shows the team’s discipline, preparation, and belief.
“Despite limited resources, we continue to give our athletes international opportunities,” he said. “With faith, hard work, and support, we are building something strong.”
The team’s preparation included a demanding training camp focused on conditioning, skills, and mental strength, with faith playing a central role in the squad’s culture.
Former world heavyweight champion Faumuina David Tua led the technical training programme, supported by assistant coaches and management staff.
In the elite division, captain Saliuafi Tuautu (75kg) won two gold medals, while Jolando Ta’ala (90+kg) claimed gold and was named Best Male Boxer.
Other elite medallists included Ioane Ioane (60kg) with one gold and one silver, Darius Poulava (80kg) with one gold and one silver, and Luke Schwalger (85kg) with one gold and one silver.
In the youth division, Alavine Sasa (60kg) and Anthony Lama-Roebeck (65kg) each won two gold medals, while Mike Vui (70kg) added one gold and one silver. Wells Matua (80kg) secured gold, and Polu Ta’avao (85kg) and Tasi Saufoi (90kg) won silver medals.
Lemisio said the organisation aims to expand opportunities for young fighters despite financial challenges, with plans to field full teams in future international competitions.
He said IBS will now focus on upcoming events, including the Oceania Boxing Championships, International Marist Boxing Event, and preparations for major tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games, and Elite World Cup.
Independent Boxing Samoa is the national governing body for boxing in Samoa and continues to run grassroots training programs through its academy, open to all ages.
