OEC announces closing of Vaimauga No.3 voter roll
The Office of the Electoral Commission has announced the temporary closure of the electoral roll for the Vaimauga No.3 constituency. Voters who have not registered have until next week to register.
In a public notice issued this week, the OEC said the electoral roll for Vaimauga No.3 will be closed on Friday, 3 April and will remain closed until after the by‑election.
Pursuant to Section 151(1) and (3) of the Electoral Act 2019, the closure is intended to prepare updated voter lists for the upcoming polls.
The notice also states that, in accordance with Section 13(7) of the Electoral Act 2019, applications for voter registration will close at 4:00 pm on Thursday, 2 April.
Voters seeking to register or update their details may do so at the Electoral Commission’s main office in Mulinu’u on the island of Upolu or at the temporary office at Salelologa Market on Savai’i.
The by‑election was triggered by the resignation of Taioaliiseu Saunia Fiti, who was the sitting member of parliament for Vaimauga 3. Taioaliiseu stepped down from parliament and the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) to join the Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party.
With the electoral roll now set to close, candidates and parties are expected to intensify campaigning in the lead‑up to the vote. The date for the by‑election itself has not yet been announced.
