A search for a fisherman in Savai'i from Salelavalu and one from Ti'avea and Samusu has been called off, confirmed the acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga.

Leiataua, during the Disaster Advisory Committee press conference earlier this week, said the search was conducted for five days for both missing fishermen, but they have not been found.

"The search has been called off, and we are now awaiting any information in the future from members of the public or villagers on some leads on where to search for these men," Leiataua said.

The Salelavalu fisherman was out fishing two weeks ago. Similarly, the man from Ti'avea and Samusu was also out fishing with two other men, but the other two returned.

In addition, Fire and Emergency  Services Authority Commissioner (FESA) Tanuvasa Petone Mauga said it's very important that the police, the FESA, the alii and faipule and the public work together to avoid anymore drowning incidents in the future.

Tanuvasa said they were the ones who searched for the 19-year-old who drowned at Sauniatu Waterfall last Saturday.

He said the search was conducted for 24 hours, and the body of the young man was found on Sunday afternoon.

"We sought permission from the alii and faipule of the village because we knew it was a Sunday, and I thank the cooperation from the matai of the village that we were able to continue with the search," he said.

Five latest bodies are now at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital morgue awaiting autopsies by the forensic pathologist.

Tanuvasa again warned the members of the public to be on the alert and not to swim during bad weather.
