Mauga Precious Chang has been officially appointed Attorney General. Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced Thursday during a press conference.

Laaulialemalietoa said her appointment follows the recommendation of the Public Service Commission.

He said two other applicants submitted applications but did not complete the required documentation or meet the qualifications, the prime minister said.

Chang will serve a three-year term. A formal swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for next week, pending cabinet approval.

She was previously named acting Attorney General on 19 January, after Su'a Hellene Wallwork chose not to renew her contract.

Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa said Mauga was selected because her legal advice had been instrumental in helping the party form government.

He said the position is one of trust, and the government needed someone who could provide guidance and advice that could be relied upon

Mauga holds both a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
