Police officers conducted regular patrols along the Aleipata coastline on Christmas Day, continuing into Boxing Day, to manage the large crowds and maintain public safety during the busy holiday period.
Their presence helped keep the atmosphere calm and family-friendly, and no road accidents or other incidents were observed in the area.
The Aleipata region, including Salepaga, was among the busiest, as youth groups and families arrived early and stayed throughout the day, with some even remaining overnight. For many, it was also a chance to reconnect with relatives they had not seen for a long time.
Visitors set up cooking areas and barbecues, while children swam and played under the careful supervision of adults. Music, laughter, and shared meals created a lively and festive atmosphere, with volleyball games adding to the day’s enjoyment.
Many beachgoers said the Christmas season was a popular time for family reunions, with relatives travelling from different villages and overseas to spend the holiday together. One visitor said, “Christmas was when the whole family came together, and the beach made it easy for everyone to meet, eat, and relax.”
Another beachgoer added, “There were a lot of people, but everyone was respectful and just enjoying the day with their families.”
Fola, who stayed at Taufua Beach Fale for a two-day family reunion, said it had been very crowded. “It was the first time I realised my husband’s family had so many children, as each family introduced themselves at the start of the gathering,” she said. “They also organised fun games for everyone over the two days, which made the event even more enjoyable.”
Despite the high turnout, the police presence ensured the celebrations remained safe, allowing families to enjoy a peaceful Christmas by the sea.
