New maota signifies family legacy
Former Prime Minister and Sao Faapito, Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa, officially opened her new maota on Saturday in Lotofaga.
It is a site of profound cultural and ancestral significance for her aiga and the wider village community.

The new maota stands on the same sacred grounds as the original family home, continuing a lineage that has shaped both village and national leadership. At the front of the property is a beautifully crafted Samoan fale, seamlessly connected to a modern structure behind it, blending tradition with contemporary living.
The interior of the maota celebrates Samoan artistry, featuring traditional sennit weaving, carefully crafted wooden posts, and other cultural elements that reflect the beauty and skill of Samoan design. From the back veranda, the home overlooks one of Samoa’s most breathtaking coastal vistas, with sweeping views of Lotofaga’s shoreline.
The intimate opening ceremony on Saturday was attended primarily by close family members
Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa’s lineage is deeply woven into Samoa’s history. She is the daughter of the late Fiame Mataʻafa Faumuina Mulinuʻu II, Samoa’s first Prime Minister, and a long-serving leader in her own right. The opening of the maota at Mulifusi stands as a powerful symbol of heritage, continuity, and the enduring bond between people and land, a testament to the values of fa‘a Samoa and the stewardship of family and village for generations to come.
