$5M school complex for Saina-Toamua Primary
Construction of a new Saina Toamua Primary School complex worth around $5.4 million (US$1.9 million) is expected to start soon.
The United States Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid project will include 16 classrooms, a library, a computer lab, a science lab, a principal’s office, a staff room, and separate toilet facilities for students and staff. The plan also calls for the safe demolition of the existing school buildings to ensure the new campus meets high construction and safety standards.
US Chargé d’Affaires Daniel Tarapacki and Ministry of Education and Culture Chief Executive Officer Aeau Christopher Hazelman have signed the agreement confirming the project.
Last month, the condition of the school was highlighted. Parents had raised concerns as the condition out children at risk.
In a statement, the US Embassy said that since May 2024, they have worked closely with the Ministry of Education and Culture and school leaders to address concerns about ageing infrastructure and student well-being. The agreement sets the framework for the construction of a modern school complex designed to serve the Saina-Toamua community for decades.
“This investment reflects our shared belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities,” Tarapacki said, noting the partnership demonstrates a mutual commitment to the future of education and the well-being of the Samoan people.
