Samoan Catholics across Australia gathered this week to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, honouring Mary, the mother of Jesus, and their patronal saint.

Vincent Long Van Nguyen, Bishop of Parramatta, delivered the homily, highlighting the enduring faith and cultural heritage of Samoan Catholics both at home in Samoa and in the diaspora.

“Samoan Catholicism is characterised by its deep roots in tradition, vibrant cultural expression, and strong community focus, demonstrating how faith and cultural identity can thrive together,” Bishop Long said.

The bishop noted that Samoans have enriched the life of the Church in Australia, particularly in the Parramatta Diocese, where a significant Samoan population contributes actively to parish life and faith formation. He also praised the community’s passion for both their faith and cultural activities, including sports like football.

Drawing on Scripture readings for the third Sunday of Advent, Bishop Long reflected on hope and perseverance. He urged the faithful to follow Mary’s example of humble discipleship, care for the vulnerable, and steadfast trust in God.

The readings, including passages from Isaiah and James, speak of healing the broken-hearted, comforting the sorrowful, and empowering the powerless, themes that the bishop said are central to Christian living. “What the Word of God tells us today is summarised in St James’ words: ‘Do not lose heart,’” he said.

Bishop Long encouraged Samoan Catholics to continue nurturing their spiritual legacy in Australia, passing their faith to younger generations while responding to the challenges of a secular society.
