Women in Samoa are estimated to produce up to 80 per cent of food on small farms, yet 98 per cent of women in agriculture work in informal jobs, compared to 97 per cent of men, according to UN Women.

Despite their crucial role, only 41 per cent of women were active in the labour force in 2023, compared to 67 per cent of men, and only 44 per cent of businesses are owned by women. Women also earn less than men across all professional fields.

To recognise their contributions, the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (MWCSD), in partnership with UN Women, held Samoa’s first-ever celebration of the International Day of Rural Women (IDRW) at the MLS Salelologa Market in Savai’i.

The event, held under the theme “Strengthening Voices, Building Futures,” highlighted the leadership and achievements of rural women. Through the Markets for Change (M4C) Programme, the celebration also focused on women’s role in addressing climate change and promoting gender equality.

Moefaauouo Julius Tafuna’i, Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, said: “Rural women are the backbone of our communities. Their strength, resilience, and leadership are the foundation of inclusive development in Samoa. This day is a tribute to their unwavering contributions and a call to amplify their voices.”

Alison Davidian, UN Women Representative for MCO Fiji, added: “Women in our communities are on the frontline of climate change, disasters, and food insecurity. When they have equal access to land, finance, and leadership, entire communities thrive.”

The celebration brought together women from agriculture, fisheries, food processing, and textiles to share experiences, build solidarity, and promote sustainable practices. A key highlight was the Market Stall Competition Prize Giving, encouraging hygiene, eco-friendly practices, and community collaboration among market vendors.

Will Robinson, Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, said: “The Government of Australia is proud to stand alongside Samoa in empowering rural women. Their leadership and innovation are vital to building a resilient and inclusive Pacific. Through our partnership, we are committed to supporting locally led solutions that uplift communities and promote gender equality.”

A rural market vendor from Salelologa said, “This celebration reminds us that our voices matter. We are not just selling produce—we are building futures for our families and communities.”
