The Head of State, Tuimalealiʻifano Vaʻaletoʻa Sualauvi II, has proclaimed Tuesday, 16 September, 2025, as the date for the swearing-in of members of Samoa’s 18th Parliament.

The ceremony will be held at 9:30 am at the Tuanaimato Multipurpose Complex, according to an official proclamation issued Monday from Vailele. The announcement ends weeks of anticipation following last month’s general election and marks the next constitutional step in forming government.

Under Article 52 of the Constitution, the Head of State has the authority to summon Parliament after a general election. Clerk of the Legislative Assembly Satama Leatisa Uitime earlier told the Samoa Observer that the timing of the event was at the discretion of the Head of State following consultations and logistical preparations.

The Tuanaimato venue was chosen after the Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi (TATTE) building was deemed too small and the Parliament House in Mulinuʻu remained under construction. Outdoor options were rejected due to weather risks.

Preparations are underway to host members of parliament, government officials, invited guests and diplomatic representatives. The swearing-in will mark the first sitting of the 18th parliament and the formal start of duties for the country’s newly elected representatives.

The proclamation, signed 8 September, signals the transition from election to governance as Samoa begins a new legislative term.
