A man in his late 60s appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday after he was charged with more than 10 charges of sexual violations against his grandniece.

Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma issued a name suppression for the defendant and the victim.

The prosecution requested a two-week adjournment for them to finalise charges against the accused.

Justice Roma adjourned this matter to 8 September.

for the prosecution to finalise charges against the defendant. The accused was taken back into custody.

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old single mother of five was lucky to escape imprisonment on Monday.

Sia Skelton, who was charged with one count of theft as a servant, was sentenced by Justice Roma to 12 months supervision and 80 hours of community service.

Justice Roma, during sentencing, said the prosecution requested a non-custodial sentence for the defendant since she had already returned the portable speaker to the owners and had apologised.

According to the police summary of facts, Skelton was asked by the owners several times if she had seen the portable speaker, and she denied it.

A motorist who gave a lift to Skelton on the day she stole the speaker said she witnessed the accused with a speaker on the day.

The speaker, which cost NZ$1,435, was returned by the accused when she knew the witness had told the owners.

Justice Roma said the accused should use this opportunity wisely and not re-offend.
