Lauli’i women get lockable market

The village of Lauli’i came together on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, to celebrate the opening of its new Nofotane Lockable Market, a project designed to help local women earn income and support their families.
The new market is part of a grassroots effort by the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG). It gives women, especially those facing financial struggles, a safe and equal place to sell their handmade products. The project also aims to reduce domestic violence by helping women become more financially independent.
The opening ceremony started with a prayer and devotion led by Afioga Ene Toleafoa, creating a respectful and peaceful atmosphere. The event was strongly supported by the village leadership, with chiefs and elders attending. The market was officially launched by Afioga Tuialii Sua, the High Chief of Lauli’i, along with other community leaders.
Located at the centre of the village shopping area, the new market now offers a wide variety of locally made items. Visitors can buy handmade crafts, elei clothing, traditional Samoan gift items, and homemade food—all made by the skilled women of Lauli’i.
There was a joyful and proud mood throughout the event. Families and women expressed their thanks to SVSG and the European Union, who helped make the market possible. Local leaders praised the market as a big step forward in improving women’s lives and making the whole community stronger.
SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang thanked the Lauli’i leaders for their support and for helping the women in their village. She shared that one of the goals of this project is also to encourage men to support women and to say no to violence at home.
The Lauli’i Nofotane Lockable Market now stands as a symbol of hope, unity, and progress for the community.
