Former fire boss runs as independent

Health, culture, heritage, and infrastructure will be top priority for former Fire Commissioner and independent candidate Sauvao Fa'afuoina Mupo if elected as a member of parliament for his constituency, A'ana Alofi 1.

Sauvao was a public servant for 34 years. He said he is ready to contest for his constituency's seat in the upcoming election in August.

Sauvao, during an interview on Tuesday, said it is difficult for people from his constituency to access daily check-ups due to the unavailability of a clinic close to them.

"A sub-clinic would assist the people of our constituency of A'ana 1 to get access to daily check-ups, especially for children and the elderly," Sauvao said.

He said he would want a partnership with the Ministry of Health for a doctor to have a routine at this sub-clinic with two or three nurses to assist.

Elaborating on some of his priorities, he said the village council is the heart and key to conserving culture and heritage.

Sauvao said he was a bit disappointed in the language Samoans were now using on social media.

"There is no more respect, and it breaks the core values of the fa'a Samoa, which are va fealoa'i and ava fatafata," he added.

Sauvao said if there is a stable village council, people will always keep in mind their roots and will eliminate the problems with social media and the language used by Samoans.

"There is no barrier between a youth and a church minister, a villager and a matai on social media and even in parliament, we now see and hear the language used, it's just not the Samoa I knew," Sauvao said.

He said this is all part of his vision if elected as an MP. He wants to revive respect and to make sure the leaders walk the talk.

Other priorities are law and enforcement and accountability.

Sauvao believes that if any village leaders enforce the guidelines, they too must lead by example with accountability and honesty. He said there will be improvements in the livelihoods of all people in such a village.

"I believe that leaders should lead by example so that people of the village will know that what we preach is what we live for every day," he added.

Sauvao also pushes for education through better infrastructure, like access roads for children who live inland to have the accessibility to good education.

"My motto for my campaign is less words, bigger work, and that is what I'm aiming for. If the constituency wants to elect me as their new MP," Sauvao added.

Sauvao will be contesting with four other candidates who are also vying for the A'ana Alofi 1 seat. They are Leaupepetele Filipo Leaupepe, Fesolai Apulu Tusiupu Tuigamala, Fesolai Suafoa Tevita Apulu and Ufagalilo Faamanu Mualia.
