Sixteen ordained as reverends at Piula

Piula Theological College marked a significant milestone last Saturday with the graduation and ordination of 16 students from its fourth-year cohort.
The event, a culmination of four years of rigorous theological study and spiritual formation, was a moment of joy and reflection for the graduates, many of whom credited their achievement to divine guidance and unwavering faith.
Among the graduates was Alai Malatai, the eldest member of the class, who completed the programme alongside his wife, Meafou Malatai. A father of five, Malatai described the journey as challenging but ultimately rewarding.
“All glory belongs to the Lord,” he told the Samoa Observer. “This four-year journey has now come to a successful end. As the eldest in our group, I can say it was not easy, especially with five children. The truth is, without the Word of God, we would not have reached this joyful day. Even during times of hardship and financial difficulty, the Lord provided.”
Malatai encouraged others who may feel called to serve, reminding them that divine calling transcends human limitations. “We do not possess the strength on our own. But when God calls, we must respond. He alone gives the strength to endure from the first year through to the final year.”
Also graduating were Areta Areta, a former photographer for the Samoa Observer, and his wife, Lillian Areta, who served under the Vailoa Faleata Methodist Church. Reflecting on their shared journey, Lillian spoke of the emotional and spiritual challenges they faced throughout their time at Piula.
“There were many trials and hardships over the past four years,” she said. “But we are deeply thankful to the Lord for His care and protection. Who would have thought we would reach this joyful and successful day? Now that we’ve graduated, the pain and struggles seem a distant memory.”
She described the early years as particularly difficult. “It was never easy. In the beginning, we often went to bed in tears and woke up in tears. But as time went on, we adapted, and we were blessed through those trials. Today, we feel nothing but joy.”
Lillian encouraged others considering a life of ministry not to be discouraged by the challenges. “To those thinking of dedicating their lives to God, what are you waiting for? The Lord is good. Even when resources are scarce and strength seems limited, He always provides and shows His love.”
The graduating class of 2025 stands as a testament to perseverance, faith, and the enduring call to ministry. These newly ordained reverends will now go on to serve across the Methodist Church in Samoa and beyond, bringing with them both theological knowledge and the lived experience of overcoming adversity through faith.
