Malaefatu playground safety concern

Parents are asking the government to close Malaefatu Park's playground because it is no longer safe for children to play there. They say the park is broken and dangerous, and they are worried that children might get hurt.
Tanielu, a father from Lotofaga, said his children often play at the park while waiting for their bus. He believes the park should be closed until it is fixed.
“We believe the park should be blocked off and fixed. Right now, it’s not safe for our children,” he said
“It’s our job as parents to speak up and tell those who built the park to repair it before more kids get hurt.”
Another father, Aumase from Aufaga, also shared his concerns. His two children were recently playing at the park, and he was shocked by how bad it looked.
“They should close it down. It’s old and not safe. If a child gets hurt, it could be serious. I would feel terrible if one of my children were injured from playing there,” he said
The park was first opened in Early July 2015 by former New Zealand Prime Minister To’osavali John Key and former Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.
It was built to be fun, safe, and good for families and tourists. It included slides, swings, a basketball court, and areas for small and older children. The equipment was made in New Zealand and brought to Samoa to be put together by a team of experts.
Back then, the park was bright, clean, and full of happy children. But now, many of the swings are broken, the slide is damaged, and the flooring is ripped and unsafe. Some of the play equipment, like the flying saucer swing and the sand play area, is no longer operational.
To find out who is responsible for the park, questions were sent to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) to confirm whether they managed the Malaefatu Reserve Park. MNRE was asked to direct the Samoa Observer to the right ministry or authority, if the park does not fall under them. However, at the time of publishing this story, there had been no response from MNRE.
Parents say the government should take action before a child is seriously hurt. Many families still want to enjoy the park, but only if it’s made safe again.
