Weightlifter John Tafi was officially named Best Overall Male Athlete of the Pacific Mini Games in Palau as curtains fell on the shortened version of the regional competition on Wednesday.

Samoa secured third place on the overall medal tally. Team Samoa finished its campaign with a proud total of 61 medals—27 gold, 14 silver, and 20 bronze. Tahiti holds the top position with 142 medals, followed by Fiji in second place with 81 medals.

At the heart of Samoa’s remarkable performance stood a champion. Tafi won three gold medals and three Oceania records to his name. Tafi's performance was nothing short of phenomenal. Beyond his success on the stage, it was his humility, discipline, and devotion that continue to inspire Samoa and the Pacific.

Also in weightlifting, Falevaai Tafi earned a bronze medal in the Men’s 65kg weight class, showcasing immense strength and mental fortitude. This achievement follows his silver medal win at the Oceania Championships earlier this year in Melbourne, further affirming his place among the region’s elite.

In the Aquathon events, Team Samoa’s endurance athletes showed grit across land and water. In the Men’s division, Tyreece Collins and Darren Young finished 10th and 12th, respectively. In the Women’s race, Urlin Mulitalo placed 11th, followed by Manamea Schwalger in 12th. The third and final day of racing was tough, but Samoa’s athletes met the challenge head-on.

Track athlete Sierra Keil clocked a personal best and finished 6th in the Women’s 200m sprint. While she did not reach the podium, her determination and growth are achievements worthy of celebration.

In Beach Volleyball, Samoa made history by reaching the Pacific competition quarterfinals for the first time. The team of Duane and Tala finished 6th in the Mixed Team Relay, proving their growing strength in the sport.

From a team of 47 athletes, Samoa’s 61-medal haul is a testament to teamwork, perseverance, and faith.

“We give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever,” said Samoa Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee president Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork.

"To our people, fa’afetai tele lava Samoa mo lau tapuaiga. Your cheers, prayers, and unwavering support carried every athlete forward.

"We celebrate golden memories, valuable lessons, and incredible blessings that have shaped a victorious journey for Team Samoa at the Palau Pacific Mini Games 2025."
