Talented Pacific Island musicians will be on stage to officially launch Pacific Break 2025 on Friday at Friendship Park, a music competition that opens doors for artists across the region to perform on the stage.

The event, run by ABC Radio Australia, was launched for the first time in Samoa and brought together artists from Fiji, PNG, Solomon Islands, and local talents from Samoa, including Mr Cowboy and Tofaga Meke.

“Pacific Break is the biggest music competition in the Pacific. We get submissions from across Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia, at least 18 Pacific Nations, I lost count,” said Michael Chow from ABC Pacific.

“The winner gets flown to Australia to perform at the WOMADelaide Festival, one of the biggest world music events in Australia.”

The prize in terms of money is around AU$30,000, and while there is no cash payout, the exposure and travel experience are considered life-changing for many young artists.

Danielle, who won the 2022 competition from PNG, shared how the platform helped her music career grow.

“Winning was crazy. I was the first female to win, and that opened doors I never imagined. I’ve performed in Australia, New Zealand, met other artists; it’s been an amazing journey,” she said.

Fijian artist JuBen, who performs music about motivation and hustle, said the experience has been life-changing.

“Most of my music I recorded on my laptop. Pacific Break gave me a platform to show the world what I can do.”

Chris Rohoimae, from the Solomon Islands, said the competition gave him hope and a new direction after dropping out of school.

“This is just the beginning for me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

Local artist Mr Cowboy said he was proud to represent Samoa.

“There is so much talent here. I’ve always loved singing, and I want to share my music to bless others,” he said.

Samoan artist Tofaga Meke encouraged youth to believe in themselves.

“Thank God for this opportunity. We don’t always get chances like this.”

Popular Samoan radio host Young Sefa, who is helping promote the event, added, “My job is to get the word out and hype up the crowd. I’ve sent in songs myself before. If you’re a young artist in Samoa, don’t overthink, this is your chance!”

ABC’s David Seale said the competition is open to anyone living in the Pacific with an original track, even if it’s recorded in a bedroom.

“You don’t need to be signed to a major label. Independent artists and groups are welcome to enter. Just submit your song online over the next two months,” he said.

Entries open this Friday and will be accepted for two months.

The Pacific Break Concert is a family-friendly, alcohol- and drug-free event, starting at 6 pm with music from top Pacific artists and a night market organised by the Samoa Tourism Authority.

“Come out and enjoy the night,” said ABC’s Jacob McQuire. “We’ll have performances, giveaways, and good vibes for the whole family.”
