SUP launch draws crowd

A large crowd turned up showing support for the Caretaker Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa-led Samoa Uniting Party's soft launch at the Sheraton Hotel on Thursday.
Backed by 14 members of the cabinet who broke ties from the Fa’atuatua ile Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST), the newly formed party promises a continued commitment to the Rule of Law.
SUP in Samoan stands for Samoa Ua Potopoto, and its launch gathered a lineup of more than 30 candidates, not including others who have indicated their interest in joining.
Rev. Elder Efu, in his opening prayer, cited the scripture from Luke 12:49 to describe the current situation with the government.
Rev. Efu said it was no secret that the government was divided and noted that the scripture talked about breaking or destruction was sometimes necessary to rebuild.
He added he hopes the establishment of the new party would mean renewing and rebuilding the government to reunite in humility and under God’s guidance.
Fiame told the gathering of the party’s ambition to continue with the work they started and work with the Rule of Law.
Fiame spoke about how she is often criticised for being quiet and not speaking up, noting the media has often been her critics on this.
She said her position has always been to speak when she has something to say, and that takes place in the Legislative Assembly, where all of Samoa is represented.
She pointed out that this is the circle in the House where discussions for the development of Samoa take place and decisions are made.
Another matter she talked about is the importance of having impartial public servants who, regardless of their political alliance, should have the best interests of serving the people at heart.
The SUP leader also took time to talk about how crucial it is to hold on to customs and traditions that serve as a protection and instil mutual respect and maintain peace.
She referenced village councils that passed down penalties to individuals who make derogatory comments on social media, creating tension, and such action demonstrates that customs and traditions still exist.
The party advocates for transparent processes, respect for judicial rulings, and accountability in all arms of public service.
"When leaders govern with respect for the rule of law, citizens can trust their institutions, their freedoms are safeguarded, and national development can move forward on solid grounds,” said Fiame.
"That trust is something we will never take for granted."
SUP said it is committed to inclusive governance and remains grounded in the values of Christianity and fa'a Samoa, ensuring that leadership reflects the heart of the people it serves.
