Police investigation clears judge

Police investigation into a vehicular accident in Luatuanuu last Saturday has concluded that a district court judge was not at fault and falsely implicated on social media.
Following the accident, social media was rife with claims that the judge was at fault, however, a police investigation showed this was not the case.
Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo said the investigation found that the driver of the other vehicle caused the accident.
"He (the driver) did not check his side mirror before he attempted to overtake the car in front of him. When he moved to overtake the car, he crashed into the judge's car that had already overtaken the line, leading to the accident," he said.
“The driver of that car, not the judge, has been issued with a Traffic Offence Notice for careless driving, which carries a fine of $200."
The identity of the second driver has not been disclosed, and no serious injuries have been reported. Police continue to remind drivers to remain vigilant and follow all road safety protocols.
The police are also urging the public not to fall into the trap of believing everything on social media as the gospel truth. The public was reminded that defamation was a criminal offence in Samoa.
