Tupai to open barbershop with a difference

Always one to surprise with his ventures, Tupai Bruno Royale is bringing a unique grooming experience to Samoa with the launch of “Little India Barbershop”, set to open soon in central Apia, directly across from SMI Hardware.

Unlike traditional barbershops, Little India will offer a full-service experience—hot shaves, head massages, waxing, and professional hairstyling—for men and women. The air-conditioned shop is being custom-fitted inside a newly constructed container and will be staffed by two licensed stylists from India, currently in the process of securing work permits.

Tupai, who has travelled extensively in Asia and Latin America, said the idea was inspired by his own love for classic barber services.

“I was raised in Latin American countries, so I was very much accustomed to going to a barbershop and getting a hot shave,” Tupai shared. “I love to get shaved. I don’t want to do it myself. Sometimes I’m so tired, it’s like shaving a football field.

He believes the shop will fill a significant gap in Samoa’s grooming options, particularly for men. While salon services are widely available for women, Tupai noted that there’s no local place offering premium barber services like hot shaves, nose and ear waxing, or scalp massages—standard fare in other countries.

“There’s no place really that does that here, especially for guys,” he said. “And I wouldn’t let some of the barbers around here near my neck with a straight razor—even if they’re my friends,” he laughed.

The barbershop will also cater to Samoa’s growing Indian community. The barbershop will offer affordable prices and include private spaces for those who want extra comfort. Services will be open to all, and the space is being outfitted with modern equipment sourced from China, including hydraulic barber chairs, large mirrors, and professional grooming tools.

As Tupai puts it, “It’s something different. It’s a nice place to relax, get a proper shave, a massage, and walk out feeling good.”

With Water World Adventure Park on the horizon and new businesses like Little India taking shape, Tupai shows no signs of slowing down—even in retirement.
