The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development officially launched their Resilient Spirit Project: Portraits of Samoan Women Warriors, an initiative honouring the unwavering strength, resilience, and legacy of Samoan women, past and present on Friday night.

It also marks the celebration of Mother's Day. The project is a tribute to women who have shaped Samoa's history and continue to lead its future, at the grassroots and national levels. Their project highlights Samoa's ongoing journey towards Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), recognising the role of women in building resilient and inclusive communities.

The Chief Executive Officer of MWCSD, Loau Donina Vaa emphasised that the initiative honours the vital role of mothers as the first leaders in the homes, leaders whose value and strength influence national governance and development.

"These portraits do not only honour the names we know, but those whose labour was never recorded in books, yet written deeply in the hearts of families, villages, and this land," she said.

"They are the women who stayed when it was hard. Who rose when it was lonely. Who led when it was silent? Through them, we are reminded that the path to justice, peace, and equality is lit not by the brightest spotlight, but by the steady flame of service, sacrifice, and soul."

In preparation, a public call for nominations was held, inviting communities to share the stories of remarkable women who have made significant contributions. The submissions were reviewed by a high-level Selection Working Group composed of respected leaders from Government agencies, NGOs, and traditional institutions. After their reviews, only 30 women warriors were selected to be featured.

The launch on Friday night unveiled portraits of the 30 selected women warriors. An inspirational high-level dialogue session was also held at Taumeasina Island Resort. It also premiered the trailer of the project. The full documentary exploring the stories of these women will be released later this year. The film delves into their unique journey, highlighting how each woman overcame personal and professional challenges to lead and inspire their communities.

There will also be a commemorative book that will be published featuring not only the stories of the 30 women warriors but the also the lives and achievements of 51 community pillars. Extraordinary women nominated by village councils for their roles in advancing local development.

The Minister for MWCSD, Lagaaia Tiaituau Tufuga reflected on the central role of women in the Samoan life.

"Women are the refugees of their families, peacemakers whose wisdom and presence bring unity to the household. When the family is united, joy flows into the village. When the village rejoices, the church is uplifted. And when the church sings in harmony, the nation breathes in peace," he said.

The Resilient Spirit Project is a lasting tribute to their legacy and a beacon of inspiration for generations of Samoan women to come.
