The Loto Taumafai Society for People with Disabilities hopes to improve the protection and safety of young people with disabilities.

A workshop was held last week, drawing strong participation from parents, caregivers, and teaching staff. Tailored specifically for those who play a key role in the care and upbringing of children with disabilities, the workshop aimed to equip families with practical strategies and a deeper understanding to better support the unique needs of their children.

"The initiative is part of Loto Taumafai’s ongoing program to strengthen the capacity of staff, families, and clients within its Community Outreach Services. The workshop series is funded through the Ministry’s Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Grant," said school principal Sharon Suhren.

She highlighted the goals of the program, which include promoting awareness of the fundamental rights of children with disabilities, offering effective strategies for behaviour support, and fostering a compassionate understanding of the diverse needs of each child.

More than 90 participants took part in the session, reflecting the strong community commitment to fostering safer, more inclusive environments for children with disabilities.

Parents shared personal experiences and noted the positive changes they had witnessed in their children’s behaviour since attending school. Many echoed the workshop’s emphasis on open communication, strong relationships, and a greater understanding of their child’s specific needs. Participants also called for future workshops to continue building on these areas of support.

The event was officially opened by Talimatasi Sala Matafeo, Chairman of the Loto Taumafai Society. A keynote address was delivered by Afioga Olive Kaio, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (MWCSD), who underscored the critical importance of inclusion, safeguarding, and empowerment for people with disabilities in Samoa.

Loto Taumafai reaffirmed its commitment to being a voice and a trusted resource for families navigating the challenges and rewards of disability care in Samoa.
