'I miss him so much': Grieving widow
A young woman is facing an uncertain future after losing her husband to the sea last week. Last year, she lost her four-year-old son in Falefa and her 27-year-old husband drowned.
Malatina Faitotoa fought hard and gathered the courage to speak about her recent loss, the death of her husband Taufoe Faitotoa from Puleia, Savaii. The family left Falefa because the place reminded them of the tragedy that claimed their son.
She does not know what to do.
"We've been struggling financially to be able to care for our children, but my husband was a very hardworking man who made sure there was always food on the table for us," she said.
"Taufoe was a good fisherman, we were able to donate to the church, families, faalavelave and, especially, caring for our family."
"This Mother's Day will be more of a grieving day for me because my husband would have to make sure to buy me a gift, no matter what it is, but that's him; he was a loving and caring husband."
Malatina said the grief becomes worse when she looks at her children, knowing now they are without their father.
She has three children, the eldest is five years old, the second four and the youngest only two years old.
It was White Sunday last year when one of her sons fell into the Falefa River. Her husband was the one who discovered their child’s body. She had not completely healed from that tragedy when death reared its head again.
"They say time heals, but I don't know if this pain will go away as Mother's Day is approaching; it is very hard to think that Taufoe is gone," she said.
The mother is seeking financial help from the government. She does not know if her husband’s death would qualify her children for aid from the Accident Compensation Commission.
"I'll try to move on for the sake of my kids but this is very hard for me," she said.
Before anything, Malatina needs to bury her husband. She said they are yet to lay Taufoe to rest and was gathering financial to do that.
