Jessie rises above all odds
In the vibrant heart of Savaii’s flea market in Salelologa, Jessohn’s Fashion and Design stands as a proud testament to resilience and ingenuity. Jessohn’s Fashion and Design was founded by Jessie Televave Pulaa.
It is a small manufacturing and retailing outlet specialising in exquisite elei-printed dresses, local handicrafts, jewellery, and souvenirs. Each item beautifully echoes the rich cultural heritage of Samoa.
Like other businesses, Jessohn’s faced its toughest challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. Disruption to markets and resources threatened its survival. However, she was able to revive her business in 2022 and 2023 with the assistance of the Business Link Pacific programme.
According to Jessie, through financial grants and critical support, she invested in purchasing materials and upgrading sewing machines, leading to improved production efficiency and expanded output.
With these enhancements, Jessohn’s bounced back and thrived, creating employment opportunities for more women in Savaii, increasing profitability and raising turnover.
Jessie acknowledged the BLP programme for helping her secure a loan through the Samoa Commercial Bank, a vital milestone in her business recovery journey. She believes owning a business is a continuous learning process.
“I’m learning how to record important things in my business, such as profits, sales and results,” she said.
Her learning has been enriched by the guidance she receives from local business associations and on-the-ground private sector organisation.
BLP Business Service Manager, John Lemoa, explained the importance of their service to business people like Jessie.
“These partnerships are invaluable to women like Jessie, who, despite lacking formal business education, are determined to succeed through hard work and support,” he said.
As Jessohn’s Fashion and Design continues to flourish, it serves as a beacon of inspiration for small businesses across Samoa and women entrepreneurs striving to make their mark in remote areas.
