The criminal charges against a woman accused of making false claims against Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa have not been finalised by the prosecution.

Lise Marie Schmidt appeared before the District Court Judge, Talasa Saaga this week.

She was charged by police with conspiring to defeat the course of justice and allegations of providing false information to mislead the police.

But when the matter was called prosecutor Inspector Leu Poe Ualesi sought an adjournment to allow time for the police to finalise their charges.

Schmidt was not represented by a lawyer told her matter had been deferred until June. She is also yet to take a plea.

Schmidt was initially charged by Police in March following two letters she penned that made shocking allegations accusing the Prime Minister of involvement in the death of Dr Caroline Sinavaiana Gabbard.

She alleged having conversations with the Prime Minister and meetings where she claimed she was instructed to retrieve evidence connected to the death of Professor Gabbard.

Following the police investigation into the claims the charges were made, Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo said the claims from Schmidt were unsubstantiated and could not be verified.

Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa did not file a complaint against Schmidt, however, commented that police had concluded the allegations were untrue.

Fiame said if the police investigation concluded the claims were untrue she would not pursue it and she would rather direct her attention where her energy is needed.
