Agriculture Minister aspires to inspire, PhD in his sight

Balancing the demands of national leadership, family, and church responsibilities is no small feat. Yet for the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Niuava Eti Malolo, the recent completion of his Master’s degree in Environmental Science is a powerful testament to the value of education, determination, and faith.

Now in his 50s, the Member of Parliament for Vaisigano No.1 hopes his academic journey will inspire his children, his constituents in Savai'i, and the nation.

In an exclusive interview with the Samoa Observer, Niuava expressed his deep belief in the power of education.

“Education is the foundation of a meaningful life," Niuava said. "As leaders and role models, it’s our responsibility to lead by example—if we want our children to appreciate the importance of learning, we must first demonstrate that commitment ourselves."

With a strong background in education, Niuava brings decades of experience to his current role. Before entering politics, he spent over 12 years teaching science at Itu-o-Asau College and later continued his teaching career at Avele College for another three years.

His passion for science and the environment eventually led him to work for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) before entering politics.

Despite his busy schedule, Niuava made the courageous decision to return to university, proving that it’s never too late to chase a dream.

While serving as the Associate Minister for the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, and carrying out his duties as an MP, he enrolled at the National University of Samoa.

Through dedication and discipline, he completed his Master’s degree—primarily through online classes held every Friday, which he often attended while travelling between Upolu and Savai'i.

“It was challenging,” he admitted. “But with good planning, faith in God, and the support of my family and community, everything fell into place. I relied on God’s guidance through every step of this journey.”

Niuava credits his success entirely to divine intervention, prayer, and fasting. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the visionaries who established the National University of Samoa, emphasising how vital such institutions are in shaping Samoa’s future leaders.

The Minister’s motivation goes beyond personal ambition. He views his achievement as a commitment to his family and community.

“I’ve told my children: If I can earn a Master’s degree, then you must aim for a PhD. We must not only tell them to strive for greatness—we must show them that it is within reach.”

Looking ahead, Niuava is already pursuing a PhD focusing on environmental education and the ongoing global battle against climate change. His goal is to deepen his contribution to sustainable development in Samoa while inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.

He also hopes his story encourages educators in Savai’i and across the country to continue striving for academic growth. “We must lead by example,” he said. “As leaders, as parents, and as teachers—we carry the responsibility to guide and inspire.”

Niuava dedicated his Master’s degree to his beloved mother, Saina Malolo, his three children, and all the youth of Vaisigano No.1, underscoring his heartfelt belief in the power of education and perseverance.

“Everything is possible if you commit your plans to God,” he said. “Trust His timing, work hard, and never stop learning.”

In a world where responsibilities can easily outweigh aspirations, Niuava Eti Malolo’s story serves as a powerful reminder: education knows no age limit, leadership begins at home, and faith can carry us through the most demanding of journeys.
