The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) has reported an increase in concerning parental and family issues including calls from overseas for help during the 2024 festive season.

Through its free 24/7 helpline, SVSG received multiple calls related to parental difficulties, domestic violence, and youth safety.

One of the major concerns raised involved young girls, particularly those between 14 and 15 years choosing to leave their families to gain independence. Some parents sought SVSG’s help for shelter and counselling to deal with their daughters' risky behaviour.

SVSG also observed a rise in cases of domestic violence, which remains a troubling issue in Samoa. Many families requested help with emotional distress and counselling.

Calls came not only from Samoa but also from overseas, including a notable case from New Zealand regarding physical abuse. SVSG, working alongside the police and other partners, provided support and counselling services for those in need.

SVSG President, Siliniu Lina Chang, urged parents and community leaders to take a united stand against these issues. She encouraged people to break the silence and report abuse, highlighting the importance of working together for a safer Samoa.

“Let’s make 2025 a safer year for Samoa,” said Siliniu.

SVSG’s free helpline remains open to assist victims of abuse and violence. They can be reached locally at 800-7874 or from overseas at +685 800-7.
