Samoan teen wins at NZ sharemarket game
Toleafoa Janice Hickson is a proud mother whose son has become the first Samoan to win an ASX Schools Sharemarket Game.
Alexavier Hickson, 15, was one of the three boys who represented King's College in Auckland for the ASX Game and came third overall out of all the schools in New Zealand and Australia. Being the first Samoan to win a competition like such, Toleafoa told Samoa Observer that she was speechless and shocked at the same time when she first received the news.
"I'm so happy of his achievements like any Samoan parent will be," Toleafoa said.
Toleafoa said her son was good at maths and science but at the moment he's now into commerce (finance).
"Alexavier is a simple person who loves to go on the computer during his free time, he's so into coding and IT," she added.
Toleafoa said during his son's school breaks and holidays, he loves to spend them at his grandparents' farm in the Bay of Plenty, helping out with the farm.
"Alexavier spends his school holidays at his family dairy farm and kiwi fruit orchard in the Bay of Plenty picking kiwifruits, playing badminton, tennis, chess and doing computer coding and accounting work and spends his Xmas holidays at his family Mt Maunganui Bach surfing. He excels at Maths and Science at School."
Alexavier hails from the villages of Fasitoo Tai, Vaiusu, Alamagoto, Afega, Saleaula, Salailua and Lepea.
Alexavier and two other boys from King's College, James Murphy and Kade Outram competed at the ASX Schools Sharemarket game. The game teaches the students about investing, and over 100 syndicates from across NZ and Australia competed.
Alexavier's team placed first against the NZ teams and third overall.
They were given a virtual $50,000 to invest in ASX-listed companies. These three managed to turn the $50,000 into $70,000 in just 26 weeks by investing in primarily mining companies achieving an impressive 40 per cent return.
