Lakapi Samoa silent on coach's job

Lakapi Samoa, the governing body for rugby in Samoa is yet to clarify if Manu Samoa head coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger would continue in his role or has been stood down pending his court case.
However, the union has announced its cooperation with police regarding serious allegations against Mase.
In a statement issued on 27 September, following a report by the Samoa Observer, Lakapi Samoa acknowledged the situation, saying, “Lakapi Samoa is aware of the serious allegations involving our Manu Samoa Head Coach, Mase Mahonri Schwalger.”
The statement confirmed that “the matter has been reported to the police, and we are fully cooperating with the investigation.”
It emphasised the organisation's commitment to confidentiality, adding, “We will not be commenting further to respect the privacy and rights of all parties involved. While the investigation is ongoing, Lakapi Samoa remains committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and providing a safe and respectful environment for all.”
Mase, who took over as head coach in April, was charged by police last Thursday with multiple serious offences, including unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault.
The police confirmed that additional charges could be forthcoming. According to Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, Mase has been released on bail, with conditions requiring him to sign in at the Faleata Police Station every Tuesday and Friday before 4 p.m.
He has also surrendered his travel documents and is prohibited from contacting the alleged victims.
The alleged victims are reported to be related to the head coach, and it is believed that the allegations emerged following an internal family dispute connected to land.
Mase’s first court appearance is scheduled for 4 November.
His appointment as head coach followed the tenure of Vaovasamanaia Seilala Mapusua and is set to last for three years, concluding at the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
