The residents of Fa'asaleleaga No.5. on the big island of Savai'i were in high spirits as they launched seven new development projects funded by their first $1 million initiative for the fiscal year (2022/23).

This unprecedented event marks the first time seven projects have been simultaneously opened within the district, highlighting a significant advancement in local development.

The district, which encompasses the villages of Puapua, Asaga, and Lano, received a total of $840,000 from government under the $1 million tala district development project aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and services.

Members of the Steering Committee overseeing the operations of the project were in Savai'i for the official launching of the seven key projects in Fa'asaleleaga No.5.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from local leaders, community members, and schoolchildren, reflecting the widespread support and anticipation for these developments. The Faasaleleaga 5 District Development Committee, led by interim Chairman Matafeo George Latu, and the District Council Office staff were instrumental in organising and executing these projects.

For education, a significant refurbishment of the old school building for Pu'apu'a Primary school was completed with an investment of $50,000 out of the village’s $120,000 allocation.

Improvements included upgraded pathways, reinstallation of water and drainage systems, and a complete repainting of the building. The renovation was marked by a religious service and ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Tevaga Ponifasio.

Additional funding for further school enhancements is anticipated from the second million allocation.

In addition, the district also launched the refurbishment of the village water supply.

The local swimming pool, a historical water source for Pu'apu'a, underwent extensive revitalisation. This project involved excavation, seawater containment, and regular maintenance, culminating in a renovated facility with improved infrastructure such as painting and cement fencing.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the refurbished pool was conducted by Minister for Women, Community and Social Development (M.W.C.S.D.) Mulipola Ale Molioo who also chairs the Steering Committee.

For the village of Asaga, three projects were inaugurated including the perimeter wall and metal gate of the old school building, paving of the road to the beach and the construction of tourist facilities.

The project, funded with $50,000, enhances security for students. Additionally, a 500-meter road leading from the beach to key local sites was paved, improving access and tourism infrastructure.

Nonetheless, four new lodging facilities and two traditional Samoan fale (houses) were inaugurated to boost local tourism. This development is expected to stimulate economic growth and enhance local amenities.

For the village of Lano, there were refurbishment done to the village's spring pool (Vai o le Fe'e).

The village swimming pool, which had been out of use for over 40 years, was restored with significant expansion and containment improvements.

Furthermore, a new early childhood education facility was inaugurated, offering a modern learning environment for 50 students and five teachers.

But that's not all, extensive renovations were completed on the primary school building, including aluminum framing, new doors, and a fresh coat of paint. These upgrades ensure a secure and conducive learning environment for students.
