Happy Mother's Day. Teachers - mums away from home

Ana Latu Failauga has been a mother to children when they have been away from their homes. Such is the life of an educator.
As we pay homage to all mothers on this Mother's Day, a special one goes out to teachers who do their part to be mothers to children who come into their care.
With a remarkable 40-year career as a teacher, Ana has touched the hearts of thousands, inspiring a generation of young minds to reach for their dreams. From humble beginnings in Savaii to becoming a vice principal, principal, and now, a respected figure in the education sector, Ana's journey is a testament to her unwavering passion for teaching.
"I would love to see my students be bright and passionate about what they do with their life," she said in an interview.
"It's a calling that comes with its challenges but we should never give up on our young generation, they are the future of our world."
Despite facing personal tragedy, including the loss of two children, Ana has continued to inspire and uplift others. Her motherly love and compassion shone in her work as a teacher, as she has acted as a mother figure to her students. She has provided guidance, counselling, and unwavering support going above and beyond the call of duty.
"During assemblies I would give life advice to the students, to speak up and share with us teachers whatever they need help with," she said.
"We teachers have a much bigger responsibility at hand, not only do we teach, we are parents to our students and we understand that some may have fallen short on their end of the work, we ensure that students are taught both in life and academically."
Ana's journey as a teacher began in 1984, and she has since worked in more than eight primary schools across Samoa. Her remarkable career has seen her take on various roles, including vice principal at Solosolo Primary School, principal at Saoluafata Primary School, Falefitu Primary School, and Vaivase Primary School.
"Stick to your calling, this is one of the many aspects that I have cherished in my life as an educator," she said.
Throughout her years, Ana has remained committed to her motto – "Service Honour, Commitment and Sacrifice" – which has guided her throughout her illustrious career. Her motivation to become a teacher was simple – she wanted to see the children of Samoa succeed. And succeed they have, thanks to her tireless efforts.
As she concludes her three-year tenure as principal of Vaivase Primary School on Friday, Ana reflects on her incredible journey. She has taught students from Year 1 to Year 8, with a special focus on Year 7 and Year 8. Her ability to connect with students has earned her the respect and admiration of parents, teachers, and students alike.
"Many people and former students have reached out and thanked the work I do, those are the moments that keep me going," she remarked.
In recent years, Ana has also pursued further education herself, earning her Bachelor's degree in Teaching in 2017. She hopes that many teachers will elevate to bachelor level, making it easier for them to continue their education.
"It is not the degree, it is your love for teaching," she said.
Ana's story is a testament to the power of education, compassion, and the unwavering dedication of teachers like herself. As she looks ahead to new journeys in her career, she remains committed to teaching and inspiring young minds. Her message is of hope and encouragement – "I will continue to teach as much as I can."
