In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, Australia has thrown its weight behind Samoa in its quest to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy by introducing the state-of-the-art OpenCEM electricity sector modelling tool.

This innovative tool, forged through the strong partnership between the two nations, is poised to revolutionise energy sector planning in Samoa and pave the way for a greener tomorrow.

At the handover ceremony of OpenCEM Samoa, Australian Deputy High Commissioner Claire McGeechan underscored the importance of collaborative endeavours in tackling climate change.

Her address lauded Samoa for its proactive stance on environmental issues.

"Samoa's leadership in combating climate change is exemplary, both in setting ambitious national goals and advocating for global action,” Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner said.

The sentiments expressed by Ms. McGeechan found resonance with the Minister of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, the Honourable Olo Fiti Afoa Vaai, who hailed the project's alignment with Samoa's national objectives.

"Our goal is to provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all. This project supports this commitment and will empower EPC and Office of the Regulator to explore ways to enhance systems capacity in response to robust planning, renewable integration, and informed decision-making in the sector," Minister Olo remarked.

The ceremony also commemorated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, cementing ITP Renewables Australia's commitment to providing technical assistance to the Electric Power Corporation during the initial year of OpenCEM's operation.

This collaborative pact promises to propel Samoa towards a cleaner and more resilient future, setting a regional benchmark in sustainable energy planning and execution.

As Samoa embarks on this transformative journey towards renewable energy, the support from Australia not only signifies a shared commitment to environmental stewardship but also exemplifies the power of international partnerships in driving meaningful change.

With OpenCEM at its helm, Samoa is poised to chart a course towards a sustainable energy landscape, setting a shining example for the region and beyond.

Recent studies have highlighted Samoa's promising progress in renewable energy. According to a report by the Samoa Bureau of Statistics, renewable energy sources, primarily hydroelectric and solar power, accounted for 39.4 per cent of Samoa's total electricity generation in 2021, a significant increase from previous years. This upward trend underscores Samoa's commitment to transitioning towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
