Samoa mourns the loss of a respected former parliamentarian, Tupuola Tusa Misi Tupuola, who passed away earlier this week.

Tupuola's contributions to both the political arena and public service have left a lasting legacy.

Tupuola, who served as a member of parliament for Falealili East, was elected following the general election in 2011.

During his tenure, he was appointed as the Associate Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, where he played a pivotal role in shaping transportation policies and infrastructure development.

His dedication to public service was evident even before his political career.

Tupuola had a long-standing tenure as a public servant, notably working for the Land Transport Authority. In his roles as Assistant Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of Samoa's Transport Control Board, he spearheaded significant initiatives aimed at improving road safety and transportation efficiency.

Among Tupuola's notable achievements was his instrumental role in implementing key changes, including the introduction of right-hand drive vehicles in 2007 and enforcing defensive driving courses for all licensed Samoan drivers.

Additionally, he advocated for legislation empowering of police officers to utilise breathalyser devices to combat drunk driving, intending to reduce road fatalities.

He was a member of the former ruling party, Human Rights Protection Party (H.R.P.P.)

Beyond his contributions to policymaking, Tupuola also chaired special parliamentary committees during his time as a parliamentarian, showcasing his leadership and commitment to public service.

Tupuola's passing has elicited an outpouring of sympathy and condolences from his relatives, former colleagues, and members of the community who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is remembered as a hard-working individual who commanded respect within his community and was revered as a good leader.

The seat once held by Tupuola is currently occupied by Maiava Fuimaono Asafo, who serves as the Associate Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Tupuola's legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of the people of Samoa, who recognise his invaluable contributions to the nation's development and progress.
