Residents of Savai'i, the largest island in Samoa, are applauding the recent upgrades to the domestic wharf in Salelologa, signaling a new era of comfort and convenience for travellers.

Under the management of the Samoa Ports Authority (S.P.A.), extensive renovations were undertaken at the domestic wharf towards the end of 2023, garnering positive feedback from the local community. Salelologa terminal, a vital transit point, has seen significant improvements, with previously restricted areas now accessible to the public.

Gone are the days of uncomfortable steel bars within waiting areas; instead, travelers now enjoy a more pleasant experience with the installation of comfortable seating, electric fans, and even a television for entertainment while awaiting departure. This upgrade marks a departure from the past, where travelers often endured long queues and uncomfortable conditions.

Toleafoa Tili, a 56-year-old resident, expressed his surprise and gratitude for the transformation, stating, "Kudos to the government for finally fixing up the wharf." He highlighted the newfound comfort and spaciousness of the waiting area, a stark contrast to previous conditions where seating was limited, and many resorted to sitting on the floor or standing in queues.

Furthermore, Toleafoa commended the dedication of wharf staff in ensuring a positive experience for travelers and emphasised the importance of collective efforts in maintaining the newly improved facilities for long-term sustainability.

Another resident, Fetu Vaisaili, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the significance of the upgrades in enhancing the island's appeal to tourists.

"This is really great since we get so many tourists traveling to Savai'i, and I'm sure the upgrades to the wharf will really make them want to return to the island again," she remarked enthusiastically.

The ongoing upgrade works promise to further elevate the Salelologa terminal, serving as a gateway to the natural beauty and cultural richness of Savai'i. The Minister for Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Vaai, along with S.P.A.'s Chief Executive Officer, So'oalo Kuresa, recently visited Savai'i to inspect the progress firsthand, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure across the nation.

Similar upgrades have been implemented at the domestic wharf in Mulifanua, reflecting a broader initiative to improve transportation facilities and elevate the overall travel experience for residents and visitors alike.

As renovation efforts continue, anticipation builds for a fully revamped Salelologa terminal, poised to redefine travel standards in Samoa.
