A royal is in Samoa, and it is the Duchess of York, Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson. She will be participating in two prominent events involving the non-government organisation Brown Girl Woke and the Samoa Recycling and Waste Management for their Launch of Women of Waste Program.

The Brown Girl Woke event will see the Duchess learn about climate change projects and youth activism, particularly here in Samoa over a talanoa session with youth climate leaders. Ferguson is known to be in Samoa ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year.

The Samoa Waste Recycling and Management Association meeting is another important event where the Duchess of York will be present, as well as Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa.

Ferguson was recently in Australia for the Global Citizen NOW summit in Melbourne which is seeking to drive urgent action to end extreme poverty and address the climate crisis in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Global Citizen NOW summit focused on five key points, including the world’s climate crisis, gender inequality, strengthening health systems, the global food crisis, and youth-driven entrepreneurship, which is why she is attending these two events that coincide with these key points.

The ex-wife of Prince Andrew, she is also an author, television personality and public figure. The Duchess has been a strong advocate for cancer patients, survivors, and cancer research throughout her career. She has provided support to the Teenage Cancer Trust as a patron and founded her initiative called Sarah’s Trust, which aims to bring together philanthropists and grassroots charities working in the field.

Ferguson was raised in Dummer, Hampshire, and attended the Queen's Secretarial College. She later worked for public relations firms in London, and then for a publishing company. She began a relationship with Andrew in 1985, and they were married on 23 July 1986 at Westminster Abbey. They have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Their marriage, separation in 1992, and divorce in 1996 attracted much media coverage.
