More than 200 children in cricket finale
More than 200 children participated in a tournament organised by the Samoa International Cricket Association (SICA) to end their Super Kids Super Hit grassroots programme.
The Super Kids Super Hit programme is for children aged between 5–19 years and is run every Saturday targeting children keen on learning more about cricket and growing the sport in their communities. This tournament also serves as the conclusion of the community program run by SICA after a successful run this year.
The children are divided into four teams named Upolu, Savai'i, Manono and Apolima where they play their hearts out on the field. This day's event was specially held to reward the children who have been a part of the cricket programme since it started at the beginning of this year.
The SICA Programme Coordinator, Kalala Tanuvasa, said she was happy with the number of children who faithfully stayed with the cricket program and is looking forward to what's in store for next year. The day started with fun games for everyone before the U12 matches followed by the U15 and the U19.
“The children aren’t just from one village; they come from all over and from different schools," said Ms. Tanuvasa. "The purpose of the program is to continue to expose them to the sport and potentially have them discover their talent in cricket and one day represent Samoa internationally.
“We only had 80 kids at the beginning of this year’s programme and now we have 230. The community programme started back in 2016 with only 20 children and currently, we are standing at almost 500 hundred children involved in the development programme.
“We are very happy with the numbers and we are happy that the children enjoy the sport. This is to help grow the sport in their own communities as the children are the future of tomorrow.”
