Inmates do food safety course

In a first for the country, the Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS) has run its first-ever food safety course for inmates at the Tanumalala Prison.
The offering of the course at Samoa's maximum prison facility outside Apia is a result of an agreement between the SPPCS and the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC). The course was officially unveiled at the prison on Monday this week, according to a media release issued by the SPPCS.
Out of the 20 inmates who were eligible, 13 were able to commence the one-week course. These inmates had fulfilled all the necessary enrollment criteria, which included passing the Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test.
The start of the food safety course marks a step forward in providing valuable skills and knowledge to the inmates, with the SPPCS saying that this initiative not only contributes to their personal development but also enhances their potential for successful reintegration into society upon their release.
The agreement between SPPCS and APTC also allows for the offering of the first-ever construction course which was rolled out from 22–29 May this year. The collaboration between SPPCS and APTC demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the rehabilitation and reintegration efforts for inmates, stated the media release. By offering these educational and vocational courses, SPPCS aims to equip inmates with the necessary tools to lead productive lives upon their release.
The SPPCS said the agreement also confirms a positive partnership between SPPCS and APTC, highlighting their shared vision of empowering individuals within the prison system. It is also a testament to the dedication and innovation of both organisations in providing opportunities for growth and development to those in their care, according to the SPPCS.
Through initiatives like the Food Safety and Construction courses, SPPCS and APTC are making a tangible difference in the lives of inmates, paving the way for a brighter future.
Inmates who were part of the training session will receive their awards in a special ceremony scheduled for next Wednesday at Tanumalala prison. Members of the management of SPPCS and APTC as well as selected family members of graduating inmates are expected to attend.
