A district has used funding from its SAT$1 million development project grant to purchase uniforms for a tag rugby team ahead of upcoming tournaments.

The Bulldogs tag rugby team is the recipient of the new uniforms purchased through funding from the grant which comes courtesy of the Vaimauga No. 3 district.

In an interview with the Bulldogs Sports Inc. President, Asiata Alfred Lewer said that the team has managed to sustain its reputation in the rugby world in the country and they intend to do so at the upcoming tournaments.

He said their tag team's brown uniform was funded by the grant while their blue uniform for the league team is courtesy of the Island Sun promotion.

"The tag rugby team got their uniform through the Island Sun promotion by Ah Liki while the tag rugby's uniform was received through the Government's $1 million district development project through the Vaimauga No. 3 district committee," he said. "The Samoa Meat Supplies in Vailima also stepped in to assist the team, more than 15 years since the club had been developing its team to gain a reputation in the national rugby tournaments through its rugby league team while tag rugby is 4-5 years old and is the developing team.

"The boys are initially trained in the tag rugby team first before they can succeed in the rugby league team."

There are currently over 40 players in total including those in both the tag team and the league team. A special service was held on Wednesday evening to commission the uniforms of the two teams, made up of players from Letava, Vailima, and Vaoala as well as Moataa and SCOPA.

After 15 years Bulldogs has been one of the prominent teams throughout the years and usually make the top two or top three in local domestic competitions.

"We've had some great improvements over the years and we had some players being recruited in national teams through tag or rugby league," Asiata added.

The Bulldogs have been preparing for the tag rugby tournament at the Samoa Games this week and the rugby league competition on Saturday this week.
